Handbook 4.0 – Step 1 contains all the requirements for establishing, using and improving a CO₂ management system in accordance with the CO₂ Performance Ladder.

How do I calculate my CO₂ footprint?

To calculate your CO2 footprint you multiply your use of an energy source by the appropriate ‘emission factor’. There are several websites that provide emissions factors for this. These differ per country. The following lists have been designated by SKAO and therefore must be used by certificate holders depending on their location unless they have good reason (as laid out in section 9.1.3 of the Handbook).

Where can I upload my files?

Ready to get started? In My CO₂ Performance Ladder you will find a clear, interactive version of the Handbook, complete with explanations of complex passages and relevant examples. Create a free trial account to explore the platform and begin your certification process. You can also upload your documents in this environment.

Which harmonisation acts apply?

Sometimes a passage in the Handbook requires further clarification, or new insights emerge on how a requirement should be interpreted. In such cases, an additional rule is issued — known as a harmonisation act. The Handbook is normative, and the same applies to these harmonisation acts added at a later stage.

Who conducts the audit?

To obtain a certificate for the CO₂ Performance Ladder, an independent organisation must assess whether your organisation meets the requirements of the Handbook. These independent organisations are called certification bodies (CBs). Here you will find a list of organisations you can choose from.
